This article explains how to change the default Windows options so you and see file extensions. Being able to see file extensions helps when copying map files to mobile devices and other file management tasks.

For XP - Open My Computer > View > Folder options > view tab...

For Vista and Win7 -  Open Computer or Windows Explorer > Organize > Folder and Search options > View Tab...

1 - Select - Show  hidden files, folders and drives

2 - Un-tick - Hide extensions for known file types

3 - Click OK
