Compatible GPSs
There are two reasons to connect a GPS to your PC (or Pocket PC):
1. Real-time position tracking,placing a live position mark on the PC screen over a displayed map or chart.
2. Transferring information between the PC and GPS, such as routes, tracks and waypoints.
Practically any GPS unit can be used for real-time positioning, but transferring routes, tracks, and waypoints to and from a GPS requires special compatibility. Many users find it easier to plan routes on the PC than to hand-key them into their GPS, and Memory-Map facilitates this. Unlike with Real-Time positioning, there is no industry-standard for transferring Waypoint, Route and Track information. Each GPS model has its own specific “Language” for communicating this information. The table below lists the GPS units compatible with Memory-Map Navigator Software:

Note: Memory-Map brand maps cannot be loaded to or displayed on a handheld GPS unit unless it is a"compatible Device" i.e. the Holux. (We term these Mobile Devices, rather than GPS). If you are looking to put Topo maps in a Garmin GPS see Topo4GPS which has been designed for the job.

| Because the the FunTrek 130 cannot pass through a GPS signal to a PC, it is treated as a mobile Device rather than a GPS. The USB GPS is a pure NMEA GPS, nothing else. |

| Garmin have a large range of "other" GPS such as specialist in car navigators and aviation units. These tend to only communicate with the Garmin software (usually supplied with the GPS). To transfer data to and from these GPSs using Memory-Map requires the step process of first saving a file from one PC app before picking it up in another. However, all handheld Garmin units designed for outdoor or marine use are fully compatible with Memory-Map software. | ||||
