Memory-Map iPhone and iPad Free app
The Memory-Map app turns your iPhone/iPad into an outdoor GPS and allows you to navigate with 4WD maps, Topo maps or Marine charts without the need for maintaining a phone signal.
If you're serious about your outdoor adventures, you'll appreciate this no frills full featured navigation app.
How it works
Maps are downloaded on-the-fly or uploaded from your PC in advance. Once the app and maps are loaded to the iPhone or iPad, cellular network coverage or internet connection is not required for real time GPS navigation.
Please NoteOnly a 3G iPhone or iPad has a GPS built in but you can get a remote GPS for about $100 that works with other iOS units including the iPod Touch. The best example we know of is the GNS 5870 as seen here This can be purchased in Australia from here |
The FREE app has all the features of the PAID app except the ability to use the older format of maps published by Memory-Map prior to 2008. So if you're still using maps from back then on your PC and want to copy them to your iPhone/iPad, you may need the to get the paid app. If unsure, try the free app first as it'll prompt you to buy the upgrade if necessary.
The Digital Map Shop (DMS) is the in-app portal to 1000s of maps worldwide. You can either browse the maps directly in the iPhone / iPad (and this is a good way to sample some maps) or if you know what you want, it’s often easier to grab a “Packaged Download” from the DMS web pages and copy all the map files on bulk to the app.

When you first download the app, you also get the free 1:250,000 scale topo map which automatically starts downloading a section of where you are. There are many other free maps on the DMS and you’re welcome just to use those.
Generally the more detailed and best maps require purchasing but there is a free Demo period available on most maps. This enables you to sample the map and see if it something you want to buy and keep.
All Memory-Map format maps, including the ones supplied on DVD can be used on your iPhone/iPad. If you have maps in other formats, it is generally possible to convert them using the PC app for use in the iPhone/iPad.
Although the Memory-Map app is designed to be used as a standalone GPS navigator, best results are achieved when used in conjunction with Memory-Map on your PC (free download) for planning, printing and loading up maps, waypoints and routes to the iPhone/iPad.
